Duration reduplication 了…了

HSK 3
  • Time

Structure (结构 jiégòu)

SubjectVerb了Time span了

Meaning (意思 yìsi)

The structure V + 了 + time duration + 了 expresses an action that has lasted for a period of time and is still ongoing at the present moment.

Explanation (解释 jiěshì)

This structure is used to emphasize an action that began in the past, has continued for a period of time, and is still ongoing at the moment of speaking.

The biggest difference from the structure with only one 了 (V + 了 + duration) lies in the meaning of "still continuing."

  • 我学了两年汉语: I studied Chinese for 2 years (and have since stopped).
  • 我学了两年汉语了: I have been studying Chinese for 2 years (and am still studying).

The first 了 after the verb indicates the completion of the time period, while the second 了 at the end of the sentence is a modal particle signaling that the situation is still ongoing.
