What is 把 (bǎ)?

The ba construction is one of the most important sentence patterns in Chinese. It allows you to emphasize what you do with an object rather than just saying who does what. While English speakers might say "I eat an apple," Chinese often says "I take an apple and eat it" - that's the 把 sentence!

Basic Structure

The pattern is simple:

Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Other Information

For example:

  • 我把书放在桌子上。(Wǒ bǎ shū fàngzài zhuōzi shang.), I put the book on the table.
  • 她把咖啡喝完了。(Tā bǎ kāfēi hēwán le.), She finished drinking the coffee.

Notice that the object comes before the verb. This is different from normal word order!

When to Use 把

Use 把 sentences when you want to emphasize:

  • What happens to the object: 请把门关上。(Qǐng bǎ mén guānshang.), Please close the door.
  • The result of an action: 他把饭吃完了。(Tā bǎ fàn chīwán le.), He finished his meal.
  • How you handle something: 别把手机放在床上。(Bié bǎ shǒujī fàngzài chuáng shang.), Don't put your phone on the bed.

Common Verbs with 把

Some verbs work especially well with 把:

  • 放 (fàng), put
  • 关 (guān), close
  • 打开 (dǎkāi), open
  • 吃完 (chīwán), finish eating
  • 喝完 (hēwán), finish drinking
  • 拿 (ná), take/hold

Practice Tips

Start by noticing 把 sentences in real Chinese and practice HSK 4 with them by listening to how natives describe actions on objects. Then try building simple sentences:

  • 我把水喝了。(I drank the water.)
  • 请把手机给我。(Please give me the phone.)
  • 他把房间收拾干净了。(He cleaned up the room.)

With practice, 把 sentences will become natural, and your Chinese will sound much more fluent!
