What Are Measure Words?
In Chinese, you can't simply say "three cats" or "five books." You must use a measure word (量词, liàngcí) between the number and the noun. This grammatical feature is unique to Chinese and other East Asian languages.
The pattern is: Number + Measure Word + Noun
For example: 三只猫 (three [measure word] cats) instead of just "三 猫."
The Most Essential Measure Words
个 (gè), The most common and versatile measure word. Use it for people, objects, and abstract things.

- 两个苹果 (two apples)
- 五个问题 (five questions)
只 (zhī), For animals and some objects (cups, shoes, hands).
- 一只狗 (one dog)
- 三只杯子 (three cups)
条 (tiáo), For long, thin things like fish, rivers, streets, and roads.
- 两条鱼 (two fish)
- 一条河 (one river)
张 (zhāng), For flat objects like paper, photos, tables, and beds.
- 四张纸 (four sheets of paper)

杯 (bēi), For cups or glasses of liquid.

本 (běn), For books and bound objects.

Why They Matter
Using the correct measure word shows fluency and respect for the language. Native speakers use them automatically in everyday speech. While using 个 is always safe for most nouns, learning other measure words through measure words helps you sound more natural and authentic.
